HTTPMail Plugin and Leopard

Tonight I’ve had some success with getting the plugin working under Leopard. It still isn’t ready for public consumption, however it is coming along nicely.
Currently if a httpmail account is already configured it will connect to the Hotmail servers and successfully download the messages. Unfortunately sub-folders aren’t quite working yet, nor is creation of new accounts or editing of account settings.
Still, it is progress 🙂 Now it is time to go to bed and get some sleep. With a wife, two kids and a day job, I don’t get as much time to work on these things as I once did 😉

  1. Glad to hear it! Thank you so much for the effort. If there is anything we can do to help… 😉

  2. I use your plugin all the time too! (and have a co-worker that is putting off upgrading to leopard when I told him httpmail didnt work in Mail 3.0). You are doing a great job!

  3. Best news I’ve heard since upgrading to Leopard. I’ve used your plugin since 2002 and having to go back to using Safari to read Hotmail is a drag.

But I’m not sure what you mean when you wrote that if httpmail is configured it will download messages. When I upgraded, I got a warning message about my Hotmail folders which were disabled–and when Mail booted it no longer had any Hotmail accounts. And, as you said, Mail won’t let you create the account.

Why wouldn’t Apple include Hotmail accounts in Mail? It automatically accepts my gMail account, for instance.

  4. Sugith:

It’s totally, 100% Microsoft’s fault that Hotmail can’t be added to Mail natively. Hotmail can’t be added to any email reader without forking out for Hotmail Plus. Gmail can be added because Google included that functionality.

    Daniel:

Excellent news. I can’t wait till it’s ready and I can upgrade to Leopard.

  5. Hi Dan,

Thanks for the update. I think a lot of mac users are looking forward to it and have used your plugin daily for the past few years and let me thank you for the time and effort you put into this 🙂

To Sugith: Gmail uses pop/imap while Hotmail doesn’t use such a protocol which technically makes its “incompatible” with Mail and most third-party mail applications. Hope that helps

  6. Hi Daniel,

Just wanted to add my support and thanks to this blog.

I’ve used your plugin for ages now and although I mainly use gmail, your work is appreciated hugely.

    Keep up the great work,

    Thanks

  7. Your work is appreciated. My wife refuses to give up hotmail account and the e-mail can’t be forwarded.

  8. That’s really thoughtful of you. I use HTTPMAIL every day. It’s great that by meeting the need you make such a positive contribution.

  9. Thanks Daniel. Your plugin is one of my prized additions to MacOS. I am missing it very much. I hope you have much success.

  10. Thanks so much for working on this. Not having this plugin has reinforced the saying “You don’t appreciate something until you no longer have it”. Now I think the user community really understands the value of what you have given us. THANKS FOR YOUR EFFORTS!

  11. I am more than happy to know you are still working on it. This is an important extension to OS X – it bridges the Apple people with the M$ ones, without it many of us will be isolated.

Take your time and do it at your leisure time. We can wait. 🙂

  12. Daniel,

Thanks so very much for taking the time to work on this. I have been trying to get off the MSN mail for ages. No matter how hard I try people refuse to pay attention to the messages/warning I give them and continue to send me email on it. I was so happy to stumble upon this blog. After upgrading to Leopard the only only issues I had were some of my favorite mail plugins (MailTags, SpamSieve and httpmail) did not work. 2 have already been addressed and I have them working. This will be the last piece of the puzzle. Thanks!

  13. This is awesome news. Unfortunately I was tempted in to trying the Windows Live crap (TRY FREE), and now I can’t revert back to the old school msn hotmail and I don’t think httpmail will work anymore. But, I could always try and it’s good to hear that it’s being updated.

  14. The last couples of days I have been installing and configuring my new installation of Leopard. httpmail is the only and most important little plugin I miss the most. I’ve been using it for years. Thank you for taking the time to get it to work for leopard. Where is the donation button on this page? 😉

    Good luck.

  15. Thank you verry much for taking the time to make the new version op httpmail plugin. It is the most handy plugin on osx please post the update as soon as possible.
    Tanks allot

  16. Wow how does it feel to have the world at your mercy? Microsoft are so affraid of Apple its untrue. Apple are all for updating the ITunes for microsoft……..so lets have a little back please!

Great Work Dan hope you have some success soon.

    Jay

  17. Great to hear! I really depend on httpmail, and am feeling like a fish out of water without it! Thanks for your work!

    Chris

  18. Thank you kindly for the status update, eagerly waiting with donation in hand! Past version has been rock solid reliable.

  19. Thank you very much for this plugin, my family and I love it! Looking forward for the update.

  20. Thanks a lot. You should add a PayPal donate button here so people can send you money.

  21. Thanks so much for all your hard work. Do you have anyway we can make donations to show our appreciation e.g. paypal etc.?

  22. Oui c’est vrai de tous les coins de la planète, on attend la mise à jour de votre plugin pour pouvoir reprendre une utilisation normale de notre Mac préféré.

  23. To the person way above me who has “converted” to Windows Live from hotmail – the good news is that the old plug in works ok with Windows Live on Tiger still – so the version that will work for Leopard *SHOULD* still work for the non-hotmail hotmail (if you get what I mean)

  24. Hi,

Just letting you know from the Netherlands: we all support you in this effort! good luck!

  25. Agree with everything thats been said, could not have articulated it better myself. Good luck!

  26. Hey Daniel… thnx for any time you can spend working on getting the plugin functioning for the new OS. You never realize how important the little add-ons are until they stop working.

  27. Hi,
I’ve recently been thrown into the wacky world of HTTP mail because I switched my ISP to Qwest, No of course I/we have to use “hotmail”. No thanks.
So, my wife found your site and I’ve downloaded the panther and tiger versions for different Mac’s in the house and was wondering how to config them to work with the hotmail account.

Where’s the best place to find a description of how to config it??

Thanks Daniel for all the hard work you obviously put in on these apps your creating for the rest of us to use!

    Just freezing in Seattle.

  28. Glad to read it! It’s always great to see that it stills people like you who cares about helping others! Thanks 🙂
